It is that time of year again when the shops on the streets are arranged in a dazzling display of presents under a Christmas tree. A variety of colorful lights festooned on windows and doors. The cities are decorated with lanterns and the atmosphere is filled with joy and excitement. Yet the star hovering over the stable where Jesus was born is one of the most evocative images from any Christmas scenes.
Everyone enjoys giving and receiving of gifts at Christmas, however all our celebrations flow from the simple truth, Jesus was born to save. Christmas is a time of commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ who died and saved us from our sins and rose again.
One of the great opportunities we have these days is to savor the Christmas season. Themed “There is a Star,” Evangel Family Church Cagayan de Oro celebrated its Annual Family Night last December 23, 2018. Everyone came with sheer excitement to celebrate Christmas together as a family. This event has also become a warm reunion where overseas members and guests of the families away from home are welcomed back.
The glorious event started with a joyful praise and worship blended with Christmas songs. Thereafter, Rev. Andrew Kwong, Senior Pastor of EFC CDO, shared about “Finding Jesus.” In his message, he emphasized three things: God Has entered into the Realm of Mankind; Redemption Even for the Lowliest and Insignificant; and He has come to save us from our sins. Likewise, in the Gospel of John Jesus spoke to the people saying “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12).” The message was etched in every heart and became a great reminder to all.
Shortly after the sermon, everyone was blessed by the presentations prepared by the Kingdom Kids, Women’s Ministry and Young People Ministry. The mixed group of young people and adults staged the most unpredictable and amazing production since they dressed with Marvel mixed with DC plus Pixar superheroes costumes. They delivered the message that none of the superheroes can save the world. No superhero can outwit and be equal to our Savior Jesus Christ. He is the star that exceeds all others in brightness.
Everyone’s face glowed with happiness as they greeted one another a “Merry Christmas.” Subsequently, since picture-taking has been a must-do in every church event, right after the official group photo, everyone took a striking post in the beautifully made backdrop and stage decorations. There were exciting games and prizes too.
EFC CDO’s family night has become a celebration of thanksgiving, time of healing and renewed strength. Acknowledging that Jesus is the Star of the season, coming together as a family has never been this joyful. Jesus is the Star of the season, the center of our lives and the best gift of all time that we received.
