By: Anton Pontillas

From May 26 to 28, 2025, young individuals from various Evangel Family Churches across the Soccsksargen Region converged at Tinefulan, Brgy. Maligo, Polomolok, South Cotabato for a spiritually enriching and transformational youth camp themed “USWAG.” Nestled amidst verdant foliage and invigorated by the crisp mountain air, the campgrounds offered a tranquil and restorative environment conducive to spiritual reflection, meaningful fellowship, and holistic growth.

The term “USWAG,” a Visayan word signifying “to prosper,” served not merely as a thematic motif but as a personal challenge for every participant. It encapsulated the aspiration to flourish—not only in ambitions and achievements—but in one’s spiritual maturity, familial relationships, and character development. The gathering witnessed the participation of over 180 delegates, with the final night marking the event’s peak in attendance and spiritual fervor.

This significant event was collaboratively organized by the Evangel Family Churches of General Santos City, Koronadal, Polomolok, Maasim, Gawan, and Cacub, operating under the spiritual leadership of JECPP. Each congregation played a vital role in curating a dynamic program that reflected the unity and shared vision of the regional youth ministries.

The spiritual sessions formed the nucleus of the camp experience. Morning and evening services left an indelible impact on the hearts of the attendees. Pastor Joshua Ligaya inaugurated the morning sessions by underscoring the pressing need for spiritual elevation in the contemporary era. He was succeeded by Pastor Jieger Bonghanoy, whose exhortation challenged the youth to ardently pursue a life of sanctity and unwavering devotion to God.

The evening services, regarded as the spiritual apex of the camp, were marked by profound encounters and inspirational preaching. On the opening night, Pastor Fabian Sumampong set a powerful tone with his message “Uswag sa Pag-Alagad” (Advancing in Service), compelling the youth to embrace spiritual progression and align themselves with divine purpose.

The second night featured a dynamic sermon by Rev. Willy Pontillas entitled “Uswag Pa More!”—an exhortation that true advancement requires a willingness to undergo internal transformation in one’s attitudes, behaviors, and lifestyle. That same evening, Sis. Penny Belinario from EFC Cacub, Koronadal, shared a poignant testimony recounting God’s faithfulness in enabling her to pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers—an encouragement to all in their personal faith journeys.

The final evening concluded the camp on an emotionally charged and spiritually potent note. Rev. Alberto Poliño delivered a stirring message titled “Don’t Stop Here,” reminding the attendees that true spiritual growth must continue beyond the confines of the camp. He emphasized that the real test of transformation is found in the day-to-day realities of life—where faith must be actively lived. The altar call drew a deeply emotional response, with many weeping, worshipping, and surrendering afresh to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Praise and worship emerged as some of the most exhilarating and expressive elements of the camp. Each session radiated with uncontainable enthusiasm as the youth leapt, danced, and lifted their voices in exuberant praise. The atmosphere brimmed with spiritual fervor and a palpable sense of divine joy and freedom.

The camp’s daytime activities were no less enriching. Mornings commenced with devotions at 5:00 AM, setting a sacred rhythm for each day. Despite the early hour and chilly air, the youth gathered with enthusiasm and spiritual hunger, united in heartfelt worship and prayer. This was followed by communal breakfasts that, though simple, nurtured a strong sense of unity and familial warmth.

Sports such as basketball and volleyball introduced healthy competition and camaraderie. Bible-based challenges—including quizzes, verse drills, and book-naming competitions—combined intellectual engagement with spiritual formation. Team activities such as the Amazing Race kept participants active and cultivated stronger interpersonal bonds.

Creative competitions infused the camp with vibrant energy. These included solo singing, a preaching contest, and the Battle of the Bands, which culminated on the final night in a display of passion, talent, and worshipful artistry. The fusion of rhythmic drumming, melodic instrumentation, and harmonious vocals transformed the event into an atmosphere of authentic worship and collaboration.

New features added a layer of innovation and levity to this year’s program. One such highlight was the “Payabagay” solo contest—a humorous performance wherein the individual who sang most off-key was declared the winner. The lighthearted nature of the contest served to reinforce the profound truth that worship is rooted in sincerity rather than vocal prowess. Another highlight was the comedic skit competition, which portrayed relatable church scenarios with wit and wisdom, eliciting laughter while delivering spiritual insights.

The results of the various competitions reflected both excellence and teamwork:

  • EFC Polomolok claimed the Battle of the Bands title for the second consecutive year and also emerged victorious in the skit contest.
  • EFC Koronadal secured wins in basketball, solo singing, boys’ volleyball, and the Bible quiz.
  • The girls’ volleyball championship was uniquely shared by a coalition of players from EFC Maasim, Polomolok, and Koronadal.
  • EFC Gensan triumphed in the preaching contest, memory verse challenge, and the Payabagay competition.
  • EFC Maasim garnered honors in the Bible drill.
  • The Pink Group distinguished themselves in the Amazing Race.

In retrospect, the USWAG Youth Camp 2025 proved to be far more than a mere three-day gathering. It served as a pivotal moment—a divine interruption—wherein youth, separated from the distractions of technology and digital connectivity, rediscovered the power of being present: with God, with community, and with their own spiritual journey.

Participants returned to their respective churches, schools, and communities not only with treasured memories but with a renewed passion for God and a clearer sense of purpose. The call to USWAG—to move forward, to grow, and to live intentionally—remains etched in their hearts. The camp stands as a resounding affirmation that, through God, nothing is beyond reach, and the possibilities for personal and spiritual advancement are limitless.
